Shootouts, as Shorecrest girls soccer coach Mindy Dalziel stated, are the worst ways to lose and the best ways to win.

On a night where the Scots offense struggled to find the net, their 3A District 1 playoff game against Sedro-Woolley was decided by penalty kicks.

Sedro-Woolley won the sudden death shootout 7-6 to break a 1-1 tie and move on in the playoffs. Meanwhile, tears flowed for the crushed Scots who had hoped to return to the state tournament. They never dreamed their season would end on their home field so soon.

Still, senior defender Jocelyn Riordan was among several Scots who felt the way things ended did not define the season.

“I’m not ashamed at all,” Riordan said. “I’m proud of the team for what they did this season. It was one to remember both on and off the field.”

Both teams made four out of five shots in the first round of penalty kicks.

Shorecrest goalkeeper Caroline Towles saved the Cubs’ second attempt of the shootout by Noemi Frechette, to give Shorecrest an edge, but the Scots’ Ashley Rojan’s kick hit the post on Shorecrest’s third attempt and the Cubs stayed alive.

In sudden death kicks, Sedro-Woolley’s Emily Bruscas converted her kick into the right corner and Shorecrest’s Kelsey Paden followed with a shot into the left side of the net. The Cubs’ Mackenzie Shipley made the next kick, booting it to Towles right.

Shorecrest’s Alyssa Shively was up next but Cubs goalkeeper Tawsha Powell made a diving save to her right to end it.

“It was all a guess,” Powell said. “That’s all a keeper can do on those.”

After a scoreless first half, Shorecrest took the lead in the 60th minute on a shot by defender Katie McCorkell from the right side, 25 yards out.

But in the 74th minute, Sedro-Woolley midfielder Becky Larsen launched a shot from 30 yards out over the top of the defense and over the head of Towles.

Neither team could generate much offense in the rest of regulation or the two overtime periods.

Shorecrest had an up-and-down year finishing 8-4-4 overall. The Scots 0-0 tie against Jackson was the only blemish on the Western Conference South Division champions’ record. Shorecrest also beat and tied Kamiak, the second-place team in the conference.

Leading the returning players next year will be Towles, who will be a senior.

“She’s an amazing goalkeeper,” Dalziel said. “She’s literally by far our MVP.”

The Scots graduate seven seniors, including defenders McCorkell, Riordan, Shively and Kelsey Paden.

“Last year we lost forwards,’ Dalziel said. “This year we’re losing people everywhere. I feel my underclassmen can step up but we’ll be very young.’
