What’s going on in there?
That’s the question the folks at Providence Regional Medical Center ask as they host Inside Out – The Original Organ Show 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., July 17 and 18, at the Mill Creek Festival. The Organ Show features Providence nurses and respiratory therapists using real human organs to show how lifestyle choices affect the inside of the body. The free hands-on demonstration includes donated body organs such as an aorta with fatty plaque build-up, lungs laden with tar from smoking, a heart with a bullet hole, a fragile brain and spinal cord, a hardened liver due to alcohol abuse and more. The Providence Regional booth is located on Mill Creek Boulevard just north of 164th Street Southeast.
“When people see what is happening on the inside when they smoke, drink excessively, use drugs or even eat unhealthy, they start to change their behaviors. During our demonstrations, we’ve had people hand over their cigarettes and quit cold turkey. Young teens have vowed never to start the behaviors we talk about. It’s amazing the response we get from this educational demonstration,” said registered nurse Kathy Ketchum in a press release.
