State Sens. Paull Shin and Maralyn Chase want to take Gov. Christine Gregoire’s proposal for a three-year half-cent-per-dollar increase in the state sales tax a step further.
Shin has reintroduced a bill from last year that would raise the sales tax by one cent per dollar until the unemployment rate drops below 6.5 percent and then by one-half percent until the unemployment rate drops below 5 percent.
Chase said last week that she supports Gregoire’s half-cent increase in the sales tax but that she prefers Shin’s proposal.
Shin represents the 21st Legislative District, which now includes Lynnwood, Mukilteo and most of Edmonds but, for the next election, will no longer include the city of Lynnwood and will add part of Everett.
Chase represents the 32nd District, which now includes Woodway, south Edmonds, nearby unincorporated areas of southwest Snohomish County plus the King County cities of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park and Kenmore. For the coming election, it will continue to include Woodway, south Edmonds, nearby unincorporated areas and Shoreline but will add Lynnwood and part of northwest Seattle and will no longer include Lake Forest Park, Kenmore or the outskirts of Kirkland.
