Seven lawyers say they want to fill a vacant position in south Snohomish County District Court.
The County Council is expected to fill the post next month, said John Chelminiak, council chief of staff.
In the meantime, a poll of county lawyers and a screening committee will gather information to aid in the selection, he said.
The position in the court’s South District division in Lynnwood became vacant when Judge Stephen Dwyer was promoted last month to the Superior Court bench.
Lawyers will weigh in on the decision through a bar poll, which will go out next week, said Joyce Wood, executive director of the Snohomish County Bar Association.
Ballots judging the seven candidates must be returned by 5 p.m. March 5. Results will be tabulated and sent to the council on March 9, Wood said. Only lawyers who are current on their bar dues can participate, she added.
Besides the bar poll, a screening committee is being assembled to interview the candidates, Chelminiak said. The committee will be made up of representatives of the prosecuting attorney, public defender, bar association and police. Retired Superior Court Judge Paul Hansen will be on the panel, Chelminiak said.
The screening committee will interview candidates, and the council may choose to interview some or all of them, he said.
Here are the applicants:
• Cheryl Beyer, Lynnwood, who practices municipal law in Snohomish. She has worked as a temporary judge in several municipal and district courts.
• Peter Camp, Bothell, Everett assistant city attorney, with 23 years of experience in private practice and government work.
• Douglas Fair, Edmonds, a former deputy prosecutor who has worked as a temporary judge in several courts. He’s also an Edmonds School Board member.
• Beth Fraser, Edmonds, a former public defender and now the administrative attorney for the county office that decides whether defendants are indigent and can have attorneys appointed for them.
• Jeffrey Goodwin, Edmonds, who is with a private law firm that offers prosecuting attorney and city attorney services for seven cities in the county.
• Michael Hall, Edmonds, a former Edmonds City Council member in private practice. He has worked as a temporary judge and a mediator.
• Vernon Moyers Jr., Lynnwood, has worked as a general practice lawyer, trying both criminal and civil cases, and was a municipal public defender.
