Shorecrest’s girls track team has an excellent shot of winning its third 3A District 1 track and field title in a row this May.
“They’re probably stronger this year at least depth-wise,” Shorecrest track and field coach Brandon Christensen said.
The Scots lost throwers Kelsey Paden and Jocelyn Riordan, and runner Danielle Oliver to graduation, but “pretty much everybody else is coming back,” Christensen said. “A lot of kids got real strong in the offseason.”
Junior Alexis Ramos returns in the 100 and 200 meters and the 400 and 800 relays.
Senior Erin Springer returns in the 400 and 1,600 relay. Senior Marisa Brown is back in the 100, 200 and the 400 and 800 relays.
“Those three are my veteran anchors in the sprint events,” Christensen said.
Sophomore Emily Corona, who placed eighth at state in the long jump and qualified in the high jump, returns in both events.
Sophomore Elisa Ahern, the Wesco South champ in the 100 hurdles, returns in that event, as well as the 300 hurdles.
Senior Caroline Towles, who came out for track instead of softball this year, will help out the sprints, relays, shot put and javelin, most likely.
Senior Hannah Glesener is above average in all the throws, the shot put, discus and javelin, Christensen said.
Junior Nicole Wanamaker will contribute in the 100 hurdles and long jump, while versatile sophomore Ashley Desharnais competes in the 400, 800 and 1,600 relay.
Junior Danielle Lyons leads the distance runners in the 1,600 and 3,200.
Two freshman expect to contribute right away. Lynleigh Oliver will compete in the 100, 200, 400 and the relays.
Niki Harris will anchor the 1,600 relay and will compete in the 400 relay. She’s also shown talent in the pole vault.
On the boys side, the Scots aren’t as deep, but the distance contingent looks strong.
Juniors Joe McConnaughy and Chris Freeborn will try to qualify for state in the 1,600 and 3,200.
Junior Jordan Brown, who didn’t turn out last year because of back and hamstring injuries, will compete in the long and high jumps.
Junior Sam Heck leads the Scots in the 200 and 400 meters.
The Scots have plenty of throwers out this season, Christensen said.
Junior Taylor Beeson is coming back from shoulder surgery during football season and could go for a school record in the javelin.
Senior David Munro, a football lineman and captain, will throw the discus and junior David Cannon, a football lineman, will throw the shot put. Conor Wingo will go for points in the discus.
Captain Steven Shomaker will compete in the sprints and long jump.
“He’s Mr. Steady in all his events: both relays, the 100, 200 and long jump,” Christensen said.
Junior Ian Greenburg competes in the 110 and 300 hurdles.
Jason Zhu, who stands only 5-3, has set personal records in the long and triple jumps and is capable of leaping 20 feet in the long jump and 40 feet in the triple jump, Christensen said.
Turnout for track was huge this year with nearly 140 students on the team, Christensen said.
The team has 80 boys and 57 girls, nearly 25 more than usual, he said.
