EDMONDS — Shorecrest lost to Everett in the Class 3A District 1 championship but held off Arlington 2-1 Nov. 4 to earn a berth to the state playoffs.

The Scots (13-6-1) played a first-round state playoff game against Sumner Nov. 8 after Enterprise deadlines.

Shorecrest senior midfielder and co-captain Sylvia Olsby, who missed more than six weeks with a torn medial collateral ligament, was cleared to practice last week and was expected to suit up for the Sumner game.

The Seagulls knocked off Shorecrest 1-0 in overtime Nov. 2 to advance to the state tournament as the No. 1 seed from the district. Shorecrest beat Arlington 2-1 Nov. 4 at Edmonds Stadium for the second and final district seed to state.

Freshman Agen Heffernan scored off an assist from Gina Adams in the sixth minute and Adams added a goal assisted by Katie McCorkell in the 41st minute to beat Arlington. The Eagles scored their only goal off a penalty kick by Kristen Allen in the 62nd minute.

In the Everett game, the Seagulls’ Suzy Olsen scored the game-winning goal off a 30-yard cross from Sele Vance in the last minute of the first overtime to punch the Seagulls’ ticket to the state tournament. Olsen popped the shot over goalkeeper Caroline Towles after she came out of the goal. Some miscommunication in the back contributed to the goal, Shorecrest defender Jocelyn Riordan said.

“They dominated the second half,” Riordan said. “We couldn’t get our game going and (get into) our rhythm.”

Since a fourth-place finish in the 1993 state tournament, Everett has endured years of miserable and heartbreaking seasons.

“It is so exciting because we have not been in (the tournament for) so long,” Olsen said.

Everett’s goalkeeper Makenna Brinster and defense limited the scoring chances of Shorecrest’s dangerous forwards Cora Speidel and Gina Adams.

“They make my job easy,” Brinster said of her defensive line. “They are one of the best defenses I think that Everett has had in a long time.”
