Surpassing last season’s top-six finish, Shoreline Community College recorded its best showing ever at last weekend’s NWAACC volleyball championships.

Two-time defending champion Mount Hood earned its third straight title, dismissing Shoreline 30-28, 30-25, 22-30, 30-21 in the Nov. 23 championship match at Spokane Falls Community College.

It was a rematch of Mount Hood’s 31-29, 30-24, 16-30, 30-2 victory over the Dolphins in the second round of the 16-team, double-elimination tournament.

“After that first match, a lot of people were saying that was going to be the final — Shoreline and Mount Hood,” Shoreline co-coach Raquel West said.

To reach the final, the Dolphins reeled off five consecutive wins — including four on the final day. Shoreline scored a 24-30, 30-23, 15-11 comeback win over fourth-place Spokane before defeating third-place Bellevue 30-24, 30-23 to secure one last shot at Mount Hood.

“We were very tired at the end,” West said. “We had to play a lot more matches than (Mount Hood) coming back through the loser’s bracket.”

Playing in its fifth final in seven years, Mount Hood captured its sixth championship. The Saints also won titles in 1978, ‘89, ‘93, 2000 and ‘01.

Shoreline’s Shannon Cullier and Yulissa Zamudio were named to the all-tournament team and Jessica English was a second-team selection.
