Athletes in the Shoreline School District who have been able to find a home on C teams after not making varsity or junior varsity teams won’t have that option next year.

The district has suspended C team athletic programs indefinitely to save money in the 2007-08 budget.

The elimination of the C team programs will save about $35,000 next year. The district’s other athletic programs including varsity, junior varsity, and freshman basketball, football and volleyball teams are not affected.

During the 2006-2007 school year, Shorewood and Shorecrest fielded C teams in boys and girls soccer, and baseball, and Shorecrest fielded a C team in girls tennis. The district does not field freshman teams in soccer, baseball or tennis. The district first offered C team programs in the 2000-01 school year.

“It’s something we hope won’t be permanent,” said Arnie Moreno, an at-large representative with the Shoreline Athletics and Activities Association, the bargaining unit for district coaches. “We’re definitely looking in the future to bring them back if it’s possible financially.”

The district has closed two elementary schools and made cuts in many other areas as it tries to dig itself out of a budget shortfall that stems from errors in the 2005-06 budget.
