Four seniors at Shorewood and two at Shorecrest have qualified as National Merit Finalists.
From Shorewood are Wilfred Chan, Frazier Mork, Claire Nieman and Virginia Wang. From Shorecrest are Travis Baseler and Anna Bowen.
As National Merit Finalists, these students have the opportunity to compete for Merit Scholarship awards. They had been previously announced as semifinalists last fall.
More than 1.4 million juniors in nearly 21,000 high schools entered the 2009 National Merit Program by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.
To become a Finalist, a student must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying test performance. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Andrew Deelstra, a junior at Shoreline Christian School, was a honored as a National Merit Commended student for scoring in the top 50,000 on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test.
