Ah, May. Spring is in the air, flowers in the garden and … campaign signs on the corner?
In case you may have forgotten (you’re likely not alone) the 2006 Legislature moved the state primary date up four weeks from September to August, Aug. 21, this year.
That still may seem a long way off, but how does June 8 sound? That’s the deadline to file for office and there are plenty of offices to file for in this “local cycle” year.
While election officials for years championed an earlier primary to give more time before the general election, it was the razor-thin margins and much-contested 2004 gubernatorial race that pushed the issue over the top.
The result is we all get two more months of political season. You decide if that’s a good thing.
Regardless, The Enterprise is ready. We’ll be watching and reporting on all the local races, airing and comparing the candidates’ views.
In this spot in the paper, you can expect to see endorsements of who we believe will better serve the community. But, that’s just one opinion and we urge you to share yours in the Letters to the Editor section. We try to run everything we receive. While we do reserve the right to edit letters, they aren’t set aside because we may not agree. A vibrant, civil exchange of ideas makes for a stronger community.
Besides the 300-word limit (shorter is better), we have a few ground rules for letters:
• Avoid personal attacks. Make the case for your candidate with a statement about their issues and attributes.
• No campaign letters from the candidates themselves. We assume they like themselves, this should be a forum for community views.
• Include your name, address and a phone number. We only print name and city of residence, but we use the rest to confirm authorship. Also, we don’t print anonymous letters.
And if you have any questions, give us a call, the number’s on the next page.
