Derek Stong didn’t have much time to prepare, but still made the most of his first start.

The Lynnwood sopomore was a last-second replacement at quarterback for the Royals in a 44-20 loss to Shorewood Oct. 3 at Shoreline Stadium.

Stong guided Lynnwood on three fourth-quarter scoring drives to end the Western Conference 4A South Division game.

“Not bad for a sophomore,” Lynnwood quarterbacks coach Reggie Corns said. “He played with a lot of courage. He didn’t even know he was starting until four minutes before the game started.”

Stong ran for a 1-yard touchdown to get the Royals on the board and later hit Brian Hill for a 25-yard TD strike. In between the scores, Luke St. Marie added a 30-yard TD run.

“We did all right in the fourth quarter,” Lynnwood coach Andrew Burton said. “Derek came in and we picked up some momentum as a team.”
