MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS
VFW Post poppy drive
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8870 will distribute poppies in the Edmonds community. The poppy drive will commemorate Memorial Day, and members of the Post will be distributing poppies from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., May 28 and 29 at QFC and TOP Foods.
Nationwide, VFW Posts will distribute poppies to the public prior to Memorial Day, and donations for the poppies will be greatly appreciated. One hundred percent of the funds raised will be used to provide assistance to needy and disabled veterans and their family members. Services made possible through the donations of the public are made available to all veterans, not just members of the VFW.
Edmonds
Members of the Edmonds Cemetery and Columbarium Board invite the public to attend the 28th annual Memorial Day Observance at 11 a.m. May 31, at the Edmonds Memorial Cemetery and Columbarium, 100th Avenue West and 15th Street Southwest. American Sign Language translation will be provided. The event will take place rain or shine.
Guests are encouraged to bring their own folding chairs.
Graves of all the veterans will be marked with a white cross and a miniature U.S. flag.

Wolverine: facts and fiction
At 7 p.m., June 3, at the Adopt A Stream Foundation’s NW Stream Center, Dr. Aubry, will share new information about wolverines in the area. He will also separate facts from myth and answer the question of whether or not the wolverine is really as dangerous as many think.
These events are presented in partnership with Snohomish County’s Parks and Recreation Department and the Adopt A Stream Foundation. It is geared for 5th graders to adults. Summit on sustainability
Concerned citizens who live and/or work in Bothell, Kenmore, Woodinville or Mill Creek are invited to join civic, business, faith-based and educational leaders June 18 in a conversation aimed at developing local strategies to create a sustainable community.

Public meeting on Edmonds levy tonight
The public is invited to an informational meeting about a supplemental tax levy to be proposed on the Aug. 17 ballot. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m., May 26, in the Edmonds-Woodway High School library, 7600 212th St. SW, Edmonds.
Edmonds School Board members on May 18 decided to ask voters for extra funds. It’s a special request allowed under a new, temporary state law in response to widespread cuts in state education funding.
The levy would pump about $7 million extra into the Edmonds district’s general fund through 2014. The cost to the owner of a $350,000 home would be an additional $107 per year.

Summer Staycation
The Mill Creek Christian Women’s Connection will hold “Summer Staycation” luncheon from 11:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m., June 10 at the Mill Creek Country Club, 15500 Country Club Drive, Mill Creek.

SolarFest is coming in July
The kickoff event for SolarFest is 7 p.m. July 16, with the fair running from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. July 17 at Shoreline Community College.

Art, entertainment soiree
The Edmonds Arts Festival opening night party will be held June 16 at Frances Anderson Center. Tickets are $75/person. Doors open at 6 p.m. with champagne and hors d’oeuvres and an opportunity to view and purchase art in several juried galleries. The fun continues outside on the Plaza, where guests will find surprising theatrical entertainment, dueling pianos, wine bars and a catered dinner.

YOUTH ACTIVITIES
Beginning fishing for youngsters ages 3-11
Build a fishing pole, practice casting and go on a fishing trip for trout. Parents must attend with children ages 3-6 and are requested to attend with all other ages. Instructors are members of the Laebugten Salmon Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Class meets from 9:30-11:30 a.m., June 12 at Willow Creek Fish Hatchery, 95 Pine St., Edmonds.

Book Buddies
This summer at the Mountlake Terrace Library, there will be a program for helping second- and third-graders who are reluctant readers gain confidence and learn to enjoy reading.
Teen volunteers are needed to be Book Buddies for these children, and together they will practice reading, play learning games and have fun. Book Buddies sessions are Monday afternoons from 3-4:30 p.m., July 12 to Aug. 30.
Teen volunteers can pick up applications at the Mountlake Terrace Library, and return them by June 16 to qualify. Teens are required to attend a training session at 4 p.m. June 21 and to attend at least six of the eight sessions.
Parents can also pick up applications for second- and third-graders at the Mountlake Terrace Library.
Registration will remain open until all slots are filled.
Sign up for Kamp Kookamunga
Registration is open for summer day camp programs provided by the Lynnwood Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department.
Kamp Kookamunga runs from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The weekly cost is $130. Extended care is available before and after the regular camp day. The weekly cost for morning or afternoon care is $35. This camp is for children entering first through seventh grade.
Camp We-Wanna-Go runs from noon-5:30 p.m. The weekly cost is $95. This camp is for children entering first through seventh grade.
