Young’s dive score state’s best
Shorecrest freshman diver Katrina Young set an unofficial state record at the Kamiak Pool Sept. 29.
Young’s score of 492.45 for 11 dives at the District 1 qualifier earned her berths at the district and state meets, and all-American consideration. She notched two perfect scores of 10 on an inward dive.
Young, the younger sister of two-time state 3A champion Samantha Young, will try to be the first Washington girl to break 500 points at the District 1 qualifier at the Marysville-Pilchuck pool Oct. 21.
“It could happen this year. It’s a goal she’s trying to reach,” Shorecrest dive coach Shauna Kopischka said.
Shorewood’s Elle MacGeorge scored 303 points, just short of the 315 needed to qualify for state, but qualified for districts. Shorewood’s Bailey Erdman, Jackie Sundquist and Crystal Bugai all qualified for districts with personal bests.
Shorecrest’s Claire Matsunami and Rebecca Calderon also made it to districts with personal bests.
Shoreline runners take top spots at Portland Marathon

Mike Heidt, 23, won the race in a time of two hours, 21 minutes and 52 seconds. Brett Winegar, 26, finished second overall in 2:28.0, and won the men’s 25-29-year-old division.
WIAA announces fall state tourney allocations
Most athletes and coaches dream of reaching the state playoffs.
Now they know exactly how difficult the road will be.
The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association released final allocation numbers for fall 2006 and fall 2007 state tournaments last week. Allocations were awarded to each of the state’s nine districts for football, girls soccer, volleyball, cross country (boys and girls) and girls swimming, plus boys soccer in Classes 2B and 1B. The state berths in each district vary for each sport and are mainly based on the number of schools in the district (more schools in a district equals more state slots).
The Northwest District, also known as District 1, includes teams in the Western Conference (3A/4A), Northwest Conference (1A/2A/3A), Cascade Conference (1A/2A), Northwest 2B/1A Conference and Northwest 1B Conference.
In football, District 1 received three berths for 4A, two for 3A and four for 2A. In 1A, District 1 teams will share three spots with Districts 2 and 3 this fall and four spots in 2007. In 2B, the same districts share two in 2006 and three in 2007.
District 1 received three berths in all 4A sports for ‘06 and ‘07, while it was awarded two in all 3A sports.
