Shorecrest hip-hop takes first

The Shorecrest hip-hop team captured first place in the hip-hop dance category at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s Salute to Spirit Competition Jan. 27 at the Everett Events Center.

The Scots placed first out of 57 teams and scored 85.66 points beating out River Ridge (81 points) and Jackson (81 points).

The team is headed to a national competition in Orlando March 2-5.

Also at the Salute to Spirit, the Shorewood flag team took first place in Prop Production and the Color Guard category.

Meadowdale graduate earns back-to-back GNAC player of week recognition

St. Martin point guard Jake Linton, a Meadowdale graduate, was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball player of the week for Jan. 8-14 and Jan. 15-21.

Linton scored a game-high 21 points in a 84-73 victory over Central Washington on Jan. 11 and then 20 points in a 74-64 win over Seattle University on Jan. 13.

He then scored 24 points in a 76-74 victory over Alaska Anchorage on Jan. 18 and 25 points in a 89-84 triumph over Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 20.

Linton is tied for second in the conference in scoring with a 20.1 points per game average. He also is tied for second in assists (6) and sixth in free throws (90 percent). Linton earned all-tournament honors at the Chuck Randall Classic (Western Washington) and the Sonoma State tournament.

Ex-Maverick selected as Northwest Conference hoops player of week

University of Puget Sound junior guard Taylor Marsh, a Meadowdale High School alum, was named the Northwest Conference men’s basketball player of the week for the week ending Jan. 15.

Marsh scored 19 points in the Loggers’ 77-72 victory over Whitworth College on Jan. 13, and 14 points in a 102-88 UPS win against Whitman College on Jan. 14.

Edmonds GU-17 Fireballs girls soccer club disbands after 12 years

The Edmonds GU-17 Fireballs soccer team has disbanded after 12 years. The Fireballs finished in first place in league play with 9-1 record, their fifth league title in five years. Edmonds was 12-4-1 overall.

The Fireballs advanced to the semifinals of the Presidents Cup in their final season and also took second place at the Apple Cup in Wenatchee.

The Fireballs included coach Tim Tyo, coach Dennis Dwan, Alex Weber, Andie Fagerstrom, Angela Pricco, Caitilin Lynch, Danielle Gilbertson, Haley Reutimann, Hannah Jones, Hannah Tyo, Josie Hyldgaard, Kathlyn Ehl, Katie Dapper, Kiki Contreras, Lauren Petty, Lexie Miller, Natosha Cramer and Rahhel Woldu.

WIAA announces teams for Emerald City Kickoff Classic

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced Jan. 29 the lineup for the 2007 Emerald City Kickoff Classic. Unlike last year, no local team will compete in the five-game high school football showcase.

The matchups for the Kickoff Classic, set for Sept. 1 at Qwest Field in Seattle, are: Royal (Class 1A) vs. Eatonville (2A), 9:30 a.m.; Selah (2A) vs. Franklin Pierce (3A), noon; Lakes (3A) vs. Gig Harbor (4A), 3 p.m.; Kentridge (4A) vs. Inglemoor (4A), 5:30 p.m.; and Newport (3A) vs. Liberty (3A), 8 p.m.

In the 2006 Kickoff Classic, Archbishop Murphy defeated Orting 28-6.

The WIAA also announced who will participate in the 2007 Emerald City Volleyball Invitational, which also does not feature an area squad. It will take place Aug. 31 at Eastlake High in Sammamish. The participants are host Eastlake (4A), Eatonville (2A), Eisenhower (4A), Franklin Pierce (3A), Lakes (3A), Liberty (3A), Newport (3A) and Rainier Christian (2B).
