One vote.

In the Mountlake Terrace City Council race for seat 7, political newcomer John Zambrano is the winner by the narrowest of possible margins.

The final score, after a hand-recount, showed Zambrano with 1,625 votes and incumbent A.J. Housler with 1,624. The new numbers were available Friday, Nov. 21.

“There is no winner or loser in this race,” Zambrano said. “People like both of us, as demonstrated by the closeness of the race.”

Zambrano, a long-time resident and Navy veteran, is a retired mail carrier and member of the Concerned Citizens of Mountlake Terrace, a group represented by about 300 of the more than 20,000 residents in Mountlake Terrace.

He said winning the race evoked a mixed emotion for him, as he is both excited, yet a little apprehensive. People often try to peg him as a hardliner, he said, but he hopes to prove to the citizens who voted for his opponent that he has integrity and will listen to them as if they had voted for him.

Zambrano said he has worked hard to keep the community updated on what is happening in Mountlake Terrace, and he intends to continue being attentive to the citizens, because they are the ones who put him in office.

He also said he will work to better the Council, and especially hopes to improve the citizens’ image of the City Council.

“I will work hard to restore trust in the Council,” Zambrano said.

Zambrano will fill Housler’s seat on the Council come January. Housler declined comment other than to say he would finish out his term. He had previously said he might resign his seat even if he were to win the election.
