The Washington State Department of Transportation will be doing a pair of projects in the city in the coming weeks.

Depending on weather, the state is scheduled to remove the controversial traffic island on Mill Creek Boulevard at Bothell-Everett Highway prior to June 30. The island became controversial to some city officials and residents last year because it separated a turn lane from traffic going the same general direction, instead of traffic going in the opposite direction.

In addition, the state will extend the “c” curbing in the center of 132nd Street SE at Gateway Plaza. This is being done to prevent drivers from making left turns out of the plaza onto 132nd.

Motorists wishing to go left (west) will have to use the signal at 16th Avenue SE. The area is a high-accident location and city public works staff has asked the state for more than two years to restrict left turns at that location.

East of the city, a lane on Sunset Road between 169th Street SE and Strumme Road is closed until Oct. 31. Crews are installing utilities.
