Its original dimensions were similar to that of a very petite person.
It was never officially weighed, but it was estimated to be somewhere between 75 and 90 pounds. It had a diameter of 5 feet, 2 inches, a fact confirmed with the help of a tape measure.
If anyone would have somehow been able to eat all of it, it would have blown any diet – even if the carb count per serving might’ve been fairly low.
“It” was a cinnamon roll baked by the staff of House of Bread in Mill Creek Town Center as part of its grand opening celebration, which took place Saturday, Nov. 20.
The prospect of having a free slice of something so large drew dozens of people from the Mill Creek area to the store. At times, the line extended out the door. The store itself did a brisk business and patrons were serenaded by the Jackson High School jazz band.
“Free cinnamon rolls will do that,” said Anita Warren, who co-owns the Mill Creek House of Bread with her husband Wayne.
The numbers behind the giant roll: Approximately 60 pounds of dough, 4 pounds of butter, 15 pounds of brown sugar/cinnamon mix and 4 gallons of frosting were used, according to head baker Amy Shay. The House of Bread staff arrived at the store at 3:30 in the morning that day to start making the roll, which finally began going into the oven in two pieces at approximately 8:30.
“Four of us took it off the table and put it into the oven,” Shay said.
As for the caloric content, no one could formally estimate.
“The dough is fat-free, sugar itself is fat free, it’s not horribly caloric,” Shay said.
Visitors liked their bites of the roll, which were served to them by House of Bread staff, Mill Creek Mayor Terry Ryan and police chief Bob Crannell.
Six-year-old Andrew Avenell of Everett, who was there with his parents Jennifer and Bruce and sister Elisabeth, described the roll as “yummy.” Bruce Avenell said, “It’s good.”
The event itself was one of two that new outlets of the San Louis Obispo, Calif.-based franchise did on Saturday. A location in St. Paul, Minn. had a similar event that same day.
The question of whether or not the roll would be the largest one ever baked, however, may remain a mystery. Guinness World Records doesn’t have a listing for the world’s largest cinnamon roll at its Web site, www.guinnessworldrecords.com.
“We wish we knew for sure (if it was a world record), but we don’t,” Wayne Warren said.
