Students at Spruce Elementary School in Lynnwood are working with a totem carver from Alaska in a yearlong project to carve a cedar log.
Fred Lauth Sr., a native of Hydraburg, Alaska, is now living in the Seattle area and is a member of the Haida and Tlingit tribes.
The 12-foot Western red cedar log was donated, and parents at the school helped Lauth skin it.
Now on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, fourth- through sixth-grade students are working with the carver to determine what will go onto the log and help carve it out.
“The idea for this project came to me last year after teaching some art lessons on Pacific Northwest art styles of local indigenous people,” said David Tookey, the fifth-grade teacher who initiated the project.
Lauth is a wonderful teacher, he said.
“He is being very generous with his time and experience,” Tookey said.
