Shorecrest senior Megan Farris-Mayock won the all-around title, but Shorewood won the team competition at the Shoreline Cup gymnastics meet Feb. 1.
Shorewood scored 139.875 points to Shorecrest’s 128.525 points at the meet held at Cascade Elite Gymnastics.
Shorewood has never lost the Cup to Shorecrest since the meet started in 2002, seven years ago. The two teams tied in 2003, but the T-birds have won every other year.
“With my brother coaching the other team there’s no way I wanted to lose this year,” Shorewood coach Susan Riley said, referring to Shorecrest co-head coach Thor Anderson.
Shorewood did not have its best meet of the season but its depth made the difference.
“It was not our best meet as a team,” Riley said. “We were just happy to put five in every event.”
Farris-Mayock won the all-around with a score of 32.75, beating out teammate Neva Mahler who scored a 31.2. Shorewood senior Crystal Bugai finished third with a 30.875.
Shorecrest beat 3A foe Sehome to qualify for the 3A District meet at Sammamish High School for the first time since at least the early 1990s, Riley said.
Shorecrest gymnasts won three of the four individual events. Farris-Mayock won the floor exercise with a score of 8.85, followed by Bugai’s 8.2 and Mahler’s 7.2. Mahler won the vault with an 8.7, followed by Farris-Mayock’s 8.55. Allison Sherris of Shorewood was third with an 8.4. Mahler also won the bars with a score of 8.15, edging Farris-Mayock, who scored an 8.1. Shorewood’s Tyanna DeNova took third with a 8.05, her highest score all year on the bars. Bugai won the beam with a score of 7.625, followed by Farris-Mayock’s 7.25 and Mahler’s 7.15.
Bugai had an off night in contrast with how she’s been performing during the season, Riley said. Bugai will try to earn a state berth in the tough 4A district meet Saturday, Feb. 9 at Sammamish High School.
