T-wolves on a tear

EVERETT — The Jackson softball team is back on track.

After dropping their first two Western Conference 4A South Division games, the Timberwolves won four out of their next five games and climbed above .500 for the first time this season with victories over Mariner and Lynnwood earlier this week.

Senior pitcher Meaghan Craig scattered three hits, while senior first baseman Rachel Koenig-Eng was 3-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases to lead Jackson to a 5-1 victory over Mariner April 7 at Mariner High School.

The Wolfpack (4-3 in the league, 5-3 overall) put together a complete game against the Marauders, according to coach Mike Moran.

“Meaghan did have it going on today. She was hitting her spots,” said Moran. “We got some offense when we needed it. We ran the bases real well and we did get some clutch hits.”

Aside from the second inning when Mariner scored one run and the seventh when she had to work out of a jam, Craig kept the Marauders off the base paths for the most part.

“The fastball was working pretty well,” said Craig, who added that her drop balls also were effective. “(I was) just hitting my spots. I knew that I had the defense behind me so whatever I threw probably they’d hit it to someone and we’d get the out.”

Jackson’s speed resulted in a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.

After singling, junior shortstop Erin Dreghorn stole second and scored on an RBI single by Koenig-Eng, who also stole second base and scored on a double by senior Veronica Howell.

Mariner cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first but Jackson extended its advantage to 4-1 in the fourth as juniors Cammie Engel and Kendra Bergan each laid down a bunt and later came home to score.

Koenig-Eng then led off the fifth inning with a double to left field, moved to third on a ground out and then scored on bunt by senior Breezie Miles to give the Timberwolves a 5-1 lead and close out the scoring.

“I think that we’re focusing a little more and we really beared down,” Craig said of her team’s recent success. “We know that we need to get the job done because we have such good talent on the team that we just need to put it all together and work hard like we can.”

It’s taken a few weeks for the team to come together, according to Koenig-Eng, who noted that Jackson is a relatively young team with only four seniors.

“I think we finally have chemistry,” she added.

The players were disappointed to start off league play with a pair of two-run losses to Everett and Kamiak.

“We just made a few mistakes on plays that they know they can make,” Moran said. “It wasn’t mental things. It was just plays they’ve made 100 times. Maybe it was a little bit of a lack of focus.”

Some refocusing among the players has made a big difference in the results out on the field.

Victories over Edmonds-Woodway, Mariner and Lynnwood followed. The lone blemish for Jackson was a 5-4 loss to Shorewood that could have gone either way.

“We played well enough to beat Shorewood,” Moran said. “We just didn’t get it done.”

The plan at the start of the season was for Craig and Koenig-Eng to alternate as pitchers and Moran doesn’t intend to make any changes for the foreseeable future.

“So far it’s working out just fine,” he said.

Jackson’s offense also seems to be coming on strong.

“They are putting the ball in play and we’re making things happen,” Moran said. “There’s no fear at the plate.”

In Tuesday’s game against Lynnwood, Craig’s one-out single in the fourth drove home Kendra Bergan for the game’s only run, as Jackson posted a 1-0 victory. Koenig-Eng allowed only two hits in the complete-game effort.
