MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — A 42-year-old Mountlake Terrace man who led police on a chase Thursday, July 12 along 44th Avenue West to Lynnwood before being apprehended with a stun gun inside a fruit stand faces felony eluding, burglary and assault charges.

The man, who isn’t being named because the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office hadn’t filed charges against him at presstime, was jailed in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Mountlake Terrace police had responded to a reported domestic violence assault in the 5100 block of 212th Street Southwest about 10 a.m. The female victim reported that her estranged husband had forced his way into the apartment she shared with some of her extended family and struck her on the head and arm.

The suspect then fled in a white Jaguar sedan. Earlier, the husband had been forbidden from returning to that address through a court issued no-contact order. The ex—husband had recently moved away to a residence across town, along 236th Avenue West, a police report said.

Officers drove to the suspect’s new residence but before they could apprehend him, he jumped into his car and sped away quickly, narrowly colliding with a patrol car driven by Police Chief Scott Smith, according to a police report.

The suspect continued driving at speeds exceeding 85 mph along 44th Avenue West heading north, passing vehicles en route, poking his head through a sunroof and making obscene gestures to pursuing officers, the report said.

The chase continued through a roadside construction zone along 44th Avenue West just north of the Interstate-5 overpass and ending in a parking lot, where the suspect dashed into JD Fruits, 4419 200th Ave. W.

Several officers, including the chief, chased him into the business.

“When he ran into the store, myself and officer (Eric) Jones gave him commands to get down on the floor,” Smith said. “He was struggling with us and resisting all attempts to get him down on the ground.”

Another officer fired a taser, which uses a non-lethal electrical charge, to subdue the suspect, who was booked into Snohomish County Jail.

Prosecutors have until Aug. 3 to file charges against the suspect.
