SHORELINE

Mountlake Terrace hit a barrage of five straight shots, four of them 3-pointers, midway through the fourth quarter and pulled away for a hard-fought 59-49 victory over Shorecrest in a Western Conference South Division game Feb. 5 at Shorecrest High School.

Still, Scots’ coach Jon Rasmussen could not fault his defense, which had stymied Mountlake Terrace’s inside game for much of the game.

“We played good,” he said. “We were doubling down on their posts. … We were going to get hurt somewhere. I watched Terrace play two or three times and they haven’t shot that good of 3s. They hit them tonight and we just happened to be the victim.”

Mountlake Terrace had made only two 3-point goals in the first three quarters. The Hawks finished with seven for the night.

Mountlake Terrace senior center Tatiana Heck rode the bench for much of the contest after picking up her third foul at the 3:19 mark of the first quarter.

Forward Katy Hinson, who picked up much of the slack for Heck in the first half, was whistled for her fourth foul of the night early in the fourth quarter and headed to the bench, as Ducheane sent Heck on to the court even though she had four fouls.

With their inside game not a viable option, the Hawks looked to their guards.

“You start shooting outside,” Ducheane said. “That’s what your guards do. We’re lucky they fell tonight.”

Freshman guard Cori Pingul started the barrage with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 42-40. Junior guard Emma Fritz followed with another 3 that gave the Hawks a 43-42 advantage midway through the period.

Senior forward Jesica Anissipour then hit a 2-point shot and Heck followed with her only 3-pointer of the night. Pingul then capped off the run with another 3-pointer that gave Mountlake Terrace a 51-44 lead with 2:12 remaining in the game.

The Hawks made the most of their 3s with the shot clock running out and with a hand in their face, Rasmussen added.

Shorecrest was led by Molly Gibson, who scored 13 points, and Jocelyn Riordan, who added 12.
