The best recycling idea ever?

Old skis.

You can’t use them, you can’t sell them, you can’t even give them away.

But you hate the idea of throwing them into the trash, to end up in a landfill.

So they’re stashed in your garage. Maybe they’ve been there for years. If only you could recycle them somehow.

Well, you can.

Jake Sharpe, owner of North Cascades Nursery on Highway 2 in Gold Bar, has come up with what might be the most clever recycling idea ever.

Jake uses old skis as fence posts around his nursery property. More than 500 skis of every brand, length and color are attached to his fence.

A sign at the nursery shows donators where they can drop off their old skis. Jake said he gets at least a pair a day, on average. “What can people do with old skis?” he laughed.

Jake’s a skier himself, and professes a love for the sport. “I wish I was skiing right now,” he said on a recent hot summer day.

So, next time you’re going to be in Gold Bar — perhaps on your way to the slopes at Stevens Pass with your new skis — bring along those gritty old skis you haven’t known what to do with, and leave them at North

Cascades Nursery, where Jake will put them to good use.

North Cascades Nursery is on the north side of the highway, just east of the state salmon hatchery.
