The chance to control your own destiny is always ideal.
Jackson is 4-0 and atop the Western Conference 4A Division and if the Timberwolves beat Mountlake Terrace and Cascade they will be the league champions and own the top playoff seed. Likewise, the Shorecrest Scots, who play Everett this week in a pivotal Wesco 3A League game, can win their league title and grab a No. 1 playoff seed with wins over the Seagulls and Glacier Peak. No one probably expected the young Scots to be 2-0 at this point in the league but they are in the driver’s seat.
Archbishop Murphy has rolled through the Cascade Conference so far with a 5-0 record and will face its toughest test in South Whidbey this week. A win means the Wildcats will capture their fourth straight Cascade Conference crown.
We’ll find out Friday night who will fulfill their destiny.
Everett at Shorecrest
Game time: 7 p.m., Friday Oct. 24 at Shoreline Stadium.
Records: Shorecrest (2-0 league, 4-3 overall); Everett (1-1, 4-3)
Last year’s result: Everett 23, Shorecrest 20.
Last week’s results: Shorecrest 27, Lynnwood 14; Glacier Peak 42, Everett 24.
Players to watch: Everett quarterback Chase Herrick ran for two touchdowns and passed for another in the Seagulls’ loss to Glacier Peak. Shorecrest’s Jordan Brown rushed 24 times for 139 yards and caught 30-yard and 28-yard touchdown passes from quarterback Sam Heck. Michael Harris rushed for two touchdowns for the Scots as well.
Breakdown: Everett has lost three of its last four games while Shorecrest has won its last two league games. Both teams have been inconsistent at times and that has been a result of turnovers. Whoever takes care of the ball the best should win this game. Herrick leads what can be a high-powered, multiple set offense while Shorecrest counters with the one-two punch of speedsters Brown and Harris. The game, Homecoming for Shorewcrest, will be broadcast on Shoreline Public Schools channel 26. DVDs of the game will be on sale for $15.
Enterprise pick: Shorecrest 21, Everett 20.
Granite Falls at King’s
Game time: 7 p.m.
Records: King’s (2-3 conference, 4-3 overall); Granite Falls (3-2, 4-3).
Last year’s result: Granite Falls 28, King’s 15
Last week’s results: King’s 48, Sultan 27; Granite Falls 28, South Whidbey 19.
Players to watch: Granite Falls quarterback Jacob Howard rushed 11 times for 79 yards and a touchdown in the Tigers’ upset of South Whidbey. Brandon Brown added 84 yards rushing. King’s quarterback Thomas Vincent ran for three touchdowns and passed for three more against Sultan. Wideout Curtis Clauson caught five passes for 132 yards and a touchdown. John Burley intercepted two passes from his cornerback spot and caught two touchdowns as a receiver. Linebacker Seiya Kitchens had eight tackles, five solo and picked off two passes, returning one for a touchdown.
Breakdown: Granite Falls pulled off a big upset of South Whidbey last week and hopes to solidify its chances at a playoff berth with a win over King’s. The Knights hope to get another conference win at home. The King’s defense racked up seven interceptions and nine total turnovers in the win over Sultan. King’s is unlikely it will repeat those numbers but winning the turnover battle will be probably be necessary to win the game.
Enterprise pick: Granite Falls 32, King’s 27.
Shorewood at Glacier Peak
Game time: 7 p.m. at Snohomish High School
Records: Shorewood (0-5 conference, 0-7 overall); Glacier Peak (2-1 league, 3-4 overall).
Last year’s result: Did not play.
Last week’s results: Cascade 26, Shorewood 7; Glacier Peak 42, Everett 24.
Players to watch: Glacier Peak quarterback Zach Richter completed 22-of-31 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns against Everett. Receiver Luke Westberg caught eight passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Dorian Lair, Shorewood’s leading rusher, scored on a 2-yard run against Cascade.
Breakdown: Glacier Peak, a team with no seniors, got its biggest win of the year over Everett last week. The young team is led by its quarterback Richter, who leads a balanced passing and rushing attack. If the Grizzlies have a letdown in the nonconference contest, improving Shorewood could make a game of it. Turnovers benefitted Glacier Peak last week and hurt Shorewood, so whoever wins that battle probably has the edge. DVDs of Shorewood’s Homecoming game against Cascade are on sale for $15 through the school.
Enterprise pick: Glacier Peak 27, Shorewood 14.
Edmonds-Woodway at Cascade
Game time: 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24 at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Records: Edmonds-Woodway (3-1 in the league, 5-2 overall); Cascade (3-1, 4-3).
Last year’s result: Did not play.
Last week’s results: Edmonds-Woodway 23, Mountlake Terrace 0; Cascade 26, Shorewood 7.
Players to watch: Edmonds-Woodway junior quarterback Andy Willcock completed 10 of 15 passes for 149 yards and threw for three touchdowns. Wide receiver Din Kuses caught six catches for 103 yards and one touchdown. Grant Arnold caught two touchdowns. Cascade quarterback Aaron Frye ran for 247 yards on 21 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 70 and 67 yards.
Breakdown: The Warriors seemed to have found their groove as they have won their last three games. Willcock had his best game of the season against the Hawks. Running back Tony Heard did not play in last week’s game against Mountlake Terrace but likely will be ready for the Bruins. The Edmonds-Woodway defense produced three straight shutouts but will face a serious challenge in containing Frye, one of the league’s top quarterbacks.
Enterprise pick: Edmonds-Woodway 24, Cascade 21.
Jackson at Mountlake Terrace
Game time: 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24 at Edmonds Stadium.
Records: Jackson (4-0 in the league,6-1 overall), Mountlake Terrace (1-3, 3-4).
Last year’s result: Jackson 38, Mountlake Terrace 7.
Last week’s results: Jackson 39, Mariner 29; Edmonds-Woodway 23, Mountlake Terrace 0.
Players to watch: Jackson senior running back Taylor Cox rushed for 181 yards on 14 carries and scored four touchdowns against Mariner. Cox scored on runs of 71, 52 and 42 yards. He also caught a 9-yard touchdown. Junior quarterback Andy Gay threw for 132 yards and two scores. Mountlake Terrace accumulated only 93 yards of total offense against a tough Edmonds-Woodway defense. The Hawks are led by junior quarterback Brandyn Eckhart and junior running back Casey Ellersick.
Breakdown: The Timberwolves look to solidify their stranglehold on the Western Conference South Division title with a victory over a Hawks squad that fell flat against district rival Edmonds-Woodway. Cox, Gay and junior running back Riley Carr have powered Jackson to the top of the standings and it doesn’t appear Mountlake Terrace will be able to stop the Wolfpack. If the Hawks are to pull off an upset, they will need to control the ball on offense to keep the potent Jackson offense off the field.
Enterprise pick: Jackson 35, Mountlake Terrace 13.
Meadowdale at Lynnwood
Game time: 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24 at Edmonds Stadium.
Records: Meadowdale (1-1- in the league, 3-3 overall), Lynnwood (0-3, 0-7).
Last year’s result: Meadowdale 28, Lynnwood 18.
Last week’s results: Mount Vernon 20, Meadowdale 14; Shorecrest 27, Lynnwood 14.
Players to watch: Meadowdale’s Naji Moore-Taylor rushed for 139 yards on 22 carries and scored a pair of touchdown in a losing effort against Mount Vernon. Cameron Bayer caught four passes for 62 yards. Lynnwood’s Geoff Meinken returned an interception for a touchdown, his second of the season. Quarterback Jared Shippey threw a touchdown to Dylan Burnett.
Breakdown: Breakdown: Meadowdale had dropped its last two games and desperately needs a victory against crosstown rival Lynnwood to keep its playoff prospects alive. The Mavericks’ special teams allowed a kickoff to be returned for a touchdown, which proved to be the game-winner for Mount Vernon. Though Lynnwood has yet to win a game this season, the Royals battled Shorecrest hard and the Royals always get up for their game against Meadowdale. Expect a closer game than most observers would predict but the Mavericks should win.
Enterprise pick: Meadowdale 35, Lynnwood 21.
Archbishop Murphy at South Whidbey
Game time: 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24 at South Whidbey High School
Records: Archbishop Murphy (5-0 in the league, 7-0 overall), South Whidbey (4-1, 6-1).
Last year’s result: Archbishop Murphy 28, South Whidbey 7
Last week’s results: Archbishop Murphy 47, Cedarcrest 20; Granite Falls 28, South Whidbey 19.
Players to watch: Archbishop Murphy quarterbacks Jake Downs and Austin VanderWel combined to throw for 387 yards and four three touchdowns. Matt Huggins intercepted two Red Wolves’ passes. South Whidbey running back Henry Mead looks to get back on track after being limited to only 21 yards on nine carries. Mead had been averaging nine yards per carry.
Breakdown: First place in the Cascade Conference is on the line. The Wildcats proved they can air it out in last week’s win over Cedarcrest. The Wildcats running attack wasn’t too shabby as it accumulated 198 yards. South Whidbey is coming off a disappointing loss to Granite Falls and no doubt will be fired up. Home field should give the Falcons a little bit of an advantage but so far no team has been able to contain Archbishop Murphy home or away.
Enterprise pick: Archbishop Murphy 42, South Whidbey 21.
Enterprise last week: 6-1.
Season: 37-12
