Shorewood and its Western Conference South Division counterparts were perfect last week against the Wesco North in season-ending football games.

Senior running back Wil Barker’s two touchdowns and 116 yards on 15 carries paced the Thunderbirds to a 24-16 road win over Mount Vernon in a Nov. 5 crossover contest.

Everett, Jackson and Mountlake Terrace also posted victories as the South shut out the North.

“It’s been a struggle at times for us this year so it was nice to have the kids go up and play well and end on a positive note,” Shorewood coach Jeff Weible said. “Closing out the season with a win for the seniors and the kids who are coming back is big.”

The Thunderbirds (3-6 league, 4-6 overall) grabbed a 14-0 first-quarter lead and never trailed.

Sean Tracey connected with running back Jeff Brower for a 31-yard touchdown strike to open the scoring and finished the game 8 of 9 passing for 115 yards.

Barker scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter and turned an option pitch from Tracey into a 44-yard TD dash in the second quarter, weaving his way through the Mount Vernon defense.

“That long run really energized the guys,” Weible said. “Wil’s an offensive catalyst. Anytime he touches the ball he can take it to the end zone. If we’d done a better job blocking, he probably would have scored a lot more touchdowns this year.”

Taylor Griffith’s 40-yard field goal in the fourth quarter accounted for the only Shorewood points of the second half.

The Bulldogs (1-8, 1-9) regained possession with three minutes remaining and Riley Jungquist hit Corey Boon for a 30-yard gain across midfield. Two plays later, Jungquist’s pass in the end zone was picked off by Shorewood defensive back Adam Hammer.

Jungquist evaded the Shorewood rush and delivered an 80-yard TD pass to Justin Burns for his team’s first touchdown. Before the break Chon Garza capped a 76-yard drive by the Bulldogs with a 1-yard TD plunge.

After starting the season 0-3, Shorewood won four of its final seven games. The defeats came to the division’s three playoff teams.

The Thunderbirds fielded one of the league’s youngest lineups, with just one defensive and two offensive starters returning from 2003.

Graduation shouldn’t have such a devastating effect on Shorewood this spring.

“A lot of younger kids got some good experience and we’ll have a lot more starters coming back next year,” Weible said. “We’re excited about the future.”
