Here are some safety tips that motorists should follow to help keep children safe on their way to and from school.

• School zones are visibly marked with neon yellow signs. The speed limit in school zones is 20 miles per hour.

• If a child is within 300 feet of a crosswalk, cars must slow down to 20 miles per hour.

• It is against the law to drive through a crosswalk while a crossing guard or student is in the crosswalk.

• Students should cross only at crosswalks and look both ways before crossing.

• Children riding bikes on the sidewalk must follow pedestrian rules. Bicyclists traveling in the traffic lane must follow vehicle laws.

The crosswalk tips were provided by the Edmonds School District.
