SHORELINE — After losses to Edmonds-Woodway and Jackson, the Shorewood boys basketball team righted its ship against Mountlake Terrace in a Western Conference South Division clash Jan. 20.

Senior guard Brock Hartman scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Thunderbirds to a 55-47 win over the slumping Hawks. The victory gave Shorewood its first sweep of Mountlake Terrace since Jeff Denny became head coach of the T-birds five years ago.

“We really wanted to get this one,” senior guard John Wood said.

Shorewood knocked down eight 3-pointers in the game, including three from Hartman and three from senior guard Eric Perry.

“When we’re on, we’re hitting on all cylinders,” Hartman said.

The T-birds, who never trailed, jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter. Shorewood took its largest lead of the game, 32-12, after a 3-pointer by 6-foot-5 center Clinton Reddie in the second quarter.

“We came out so strong,” Hartman said. “We were aggressive. (In) these two past losses we didn’t show up for the first half.”

Mountlake Terrace struck back with a 10-0 run at the end of the half, capped by a long 3-pointer by Brad Balch at the buzzer.

The Hawks’ momentum carried over into the second half, as they cut the T-birds’ lead to 33-28 after a bucket by Trevor Gill, who had 15 points. Shorewood slowed the pace down and got a basket from John Allen and 3-pointer from Perry to increase the lead to 38-28.

In the fourth quarter, the T-birds built a 16-point lead and then withstood a late rally by the Hawks.

Mountlake Terrace coach Nalin Sood said the Hawks had too many turnovers, missed free throws and defensive breakdowns to win. He credited the hot-shooting Shorewood guards for making the Hawks pay.

“You can’t have a lapse of concentration against Hartman, Perry and Wood,” Sood said.

Shorewood was upset by Mariner, 44-41, Jan. 24 and fell to 7-4 in the conference and 8-5 overall. Mountlake Terrace fell to 2-9 in the conference and 2-11 overall after a 46-39 loss to Lynnwood Jan. 24.
