William Richard Joice, a Mill Creek resident and a private practice attorney, will go to trial Oct. 24 in Seattle on first-degree attempted murder charges that he allegedly shot Bellevue attorney Kevin Jung once in the head.
Joice, 50, was arrested Nov. 3, 2004 and Bellevue police later found a fake beard, pistol, bulletproof vest and other items in the trunk of his car.
Joice was charged Nov. 8 in King County Superior Court with first-degree attempted murder in the shooting of Jung, 44, of Bellevue. Joice is being held on $5 million bail.
The two attorneys had been in a contentious civil court battle on opposite sides of a case over the sale of a Korean grocery store in Lynnwood.
They had been scheduled to be in court Nov. 3, where Jung was going to ask for sanctions and a $2,000 fine for Joice not providing information.
Joice previously had been fined about $6,000 for similar actions in the same case. Court documents said two liens had been filed previously on Joice’s Mill Creek home, one for more than $18,000 by the IRS and the second for $245 for failure to pay homeowner association dues.
Joice is a former deputy Snohomish County prosecutor who has served as a defense attorney for the last four years. A former Air Force fighter pilot, Joice worked as a Snohomish County deputy prosecutor from February 1991 through December 2000, handling felony, misdemeanor and District Court cases.
Court documents said Joice was an avid shooter who routinely practiced with members of the Mill Creek Police Department.
Joice will have a pre-trial hearing Oct. 14.
