EVERETT —Trinity Lutheran College will be featured in a nationally televised program.
The CNN program “Viewpoints with Terry Bradshaw” profiles people, businesses and other stories and airs on several television networks. The college will be featured in a segment on “Innovative Faith-Based College Programs Preparing Students for Success” four times in May as part of the show’s American Education series. The segment is scheduled in the coming months to run on CNN-affiliated stations in 15 national markets and is also posted on the college’s website, www.tlc.edu.
Filming was done in September 2012 at the college, located at 2802 Wetmore Ave. The nearly five-minute segment features interviews with faculty and students and focuses on the college’s approach to higher education.
“I think they did a nice job and it says a lot of what we wanted to say about the college,” said John Reed, president of Trinity Lutheran College. “We’ve actually had quite a few people responding to it.”
In the segment, Terry Bradshaw, the show’s host and former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, introduces the college as “a five-story beacon for education and innovation.” He adds that the college is “a place where students truly feel the pulse of the real world around them.”
The school has more than 175 students in 11 majors, Bradshaw goes on to explain. It boasts a student-faculty ratio of 7-to-1 and is one of only two independent Lutheran institutions of higher education in the country.
In the clip, Reed talks about efforts to keep tuition costs affordable, the opportunity for students to study abroad and the college’s unique service learning requirement.
“This is a trademark for Trinity,” he said. “Our students are required to do service learning and they’ll have between 150 to 200 hours when they graduate. Some will have as many as 800 hours through internships and practicums.”
The requirement has led to 95 percent of students being placed into graduate schools or jobs six months after they graduate, Reed said.
Annemarie Russell, an English professor and director of communications at Trinity Lutheran College, spoke on camera about the small size of the college and about how it is unique in its faith-based education. She is happy with how the segment turned out.
“I think it did a nice job of capturing aspects of the college,” she said. “I like the variety of our students who were represented in it. I feel it really tells the truth about Trinity.”
