Barbara Van Dyke’s lifelong love of nature and the outdoors, particularly of the Northwest, comes through loud and clear in her paintings. Using the intense hues of pastels, she captures broad vistas with lush clarity. From now through Nov. 14, see a collection of new originals at Kindred Circle Art Gallery on Main Street in downtown Edmonds.

Van Dyke cannot recall a time when she wasn’t doing art. In fact, her only memory of kindergarten is getting a “real charge” out of completing a painting. In high school, she was dubbed “most artistic” in the annual superlatives challenge.

A third generation Northwesterner from Olympia, VanDyke graduated from Seattle University in 1965 with an art major, then spent two years teaching in Turkey with the Peace Corps. Her first pastel painting was exhibited in Izmir, Turkey.

She returned to the Seattle area where she earned her Masters of Art degree with a major in textile art and went on to have a long career teaching English as a second language, Art and History. Van Dyke has taken a leave from teaching High School in Bellevue, recognizing that “if not now, when?”… the time to devote herself to art is at hand. All of her work reflects her passion for history, world travel, and spirituality.

Meet Van Dyke in person from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 as she exhibits her skillful approach to pastels at Kindred Circle Art Gallery, located at 409 Main Street in Edmonds. Call 425-776-3778 for more information or visit www.KindredCircle.com.
