MONROE – Walmart plans to join the Monroe business community with an approximately 155,000-square-foot store located at the intersection of Chain Lake Road and N. Kelsey Street in Monroe.

The announcement follows a Dec. 14 meeting at which the Monroe City Council approved the sale of the property to Sabey Corp., a Seattle-based commercial real estate development firm.

The new Walmart store will provide up to 300 new jobs and a range of other benefits to the Monroe community.

“Now more than ever, customers are looking for opportunities to save money and live better. We’re thrilled to offer our Monroe-area customers the many benefits that Walmart brings to a community, including hundreds of quality jobs,” said Kelly Cheeseman, a public affairs manager at Walmart.

In addition to the approximately 300 store-associate positions, Walmart will create numerous temporary jobs during the store’s construction phase. When complete, the new Monroe store will offer a full-range of general merchandise and food, including fresh produce.

The new store will also incorporate energy-efficient technology and environmentally-sound features designed to reduce energy and water consumption and minimize waste, including skylights and LED lighting.

Currently there are 49 Walmarts, three Sam’s Clubs and one distribution center in Washington state employing approximately 17,462 associates. In its FY2009, Walmart purchased $2.26 billion worth of goods and services from 831 Washington businesses.
