What’s a kid to do?

School’s out for the summer, and even parents whose kids couldn’t wait to get out of school may hear the perennial “I’m bored” before long.

Luckily, Mill Creek has lots going on to keep kids busy.

• The city offers a variety of classes and camps. There are music and martial arts camps, skateboard lessons, a ceramics workshop, sports camps and more. Contact the city or pick up the Mill Creek Parks and Recreation’s Spring/Summer brochure for details.

• Get Movin’ is a county-wide incentives program to, well, get kids moving. The city is participating.

“It’s a program that helps children (be) physically active,” said Pam Olson, recreation supervisor. “It offers valuable incentives for the kids and families that participate. It’s very popular.”

Kids who commit to being physically active at least 30 minutes a day, at least five days a week, for four weeks can earn incentives such as free rock climbing, swimming and ice skating tickets. The program is for kids aged 5 to 17 and runs through Aug. 10.

Today, July 7, is the last day to register. Contact the city.

• Catch some rays at one of the city’s nine parks. The Mill Creek Sports Park, for example, includes an artificial turf Little League field, a modified soccer field and a skate park. The skate park is a combination of a skate bowl and several street features for skaters.

• Take in some tunes. Free Children’s Concerts run from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesdays from July 12 through Aug. 16 at Library Park, 15429 Bothell-Everett Highway. Nancy Stewart, Carl Allen and Cowboy Buck and Elizabeth are among the scheduled performers. Call the city for information.

• Take in some more tunes. The free Concerts in the Park series runs from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursdays behind city hall at 15728 Main Street. Bring lawn chairs, a blanket, a picnic or buy food from the vendors.

• Splish, splash. You’ll have to head out of town, to Martha Lake or Silver Lake, for free outdoor swimming, but in town there’s The West Coast Family Aquatic Center, a private club that offers swim lessons, a swim team and other programs. It’s at 15622 Country Club Dr. Call 425-745-3474 for prices and programs.

•”Young man!” The Southeast Family YMCA offers summer camps in the Mill Creek and Silver Lake area, including a dance camp and Music and Movement camp. It also offers martial arts classes. Call 425-337-0123 or see www.ymca-snoco.org.

• The Mill Creek library has educational and entertainment programs for youth. Call 425-337-4822 or 425-743-5544 or see www.sno-isle.org. The library is at 15429 Bothell-Everett Hwy.

• Hit the trail. The North Creek Trail starts at Dumas Road by McCollum County Park and ends at Mill Creek Town Center, running a little over a mile and a half.

• Don’t panic. Some parents get a little nervous at the ocean of unstructured time their kids suddenly face when school ends. But there’s more than one way to create summer fun.

Olson, the city’s recreation supervisor, has two children, 21 and 17. These days, they’re busy working, but when they were younger, Olson took a novel approach to brainstorming summer activities.

“I gathered neighborhood children together and had them come up with some ideas of what they’d like to do,” she said. “I let them start thinking for themselves.”

The kids did successfully generate their own ideas for things to do, Olson said.

If kids go off and do their own thing, communication between kids and adults is key, Olson said.

“If you teach children at a young age to communicate with the parents and always relay where they’re going to be and what their plan is,” she said. “I think it’s very important to have communication between parents and children.”
