SHORELINE — In only its second dual meet since the holiday break, the Jackson boys swim team had to overcome some adversity in a narrow victory over Shorecrest.
The Timberwolves had three individuals disqualified but still had enough depth to defeat the Scots 91-88 in a Western Conference 4A South Division dual meet Jan. 14 at Shoreline Pool.
“Shorecrest gave us a real good swim,” said Jackson coach Drew Whorley. “It was somewhat of a frustrating situation. We had three disqualifications, which helped keep the meet a little bit closer.”
Jackson (3-2 in the league, 6-3 overall) was led by trio of performers who each won a pair of individual events. Peter Mullins took first in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Chris Tracy took first in the 50 and 100 freestyles and Ben Ramos captured the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
While Whorley was pleased with the performances of his top competitors, he also liked what he saw from his other swimmers.
“Our depth is just getting better and better,” Whorley said. “Those guys that are plugging for fifth and fourth place are just getting faster and faster. That’s just a tribute to all their hard work … we’ve got a little bit stronger of a team.
“The one thing that we’ve struggled with this year is the depth. To see those guys rise up and try to score points is rewarding.”
The adversity Jackson faced with the three DQs was unexpected.
Mullins can’t remember any Jackson swimmer being disqualified this season.
“We worked with a lot more heart than I’m used to seeing from the guys,” Mullins said. “They really stepped up … I’ve been really impressed by the caliber of these guys.”
Mullins was pleased with his performance in the 200 individual medley but wasn’t happy with his 100 breaststroke time.
“My 200 IM felt pretty good,” he said. “My breaststroke didn’t feel as sharp, so I guess I’ll have to work on that.”
Mullins has already qualified for state in both of those events. His brother Andrew also has qualified for state in the 100 breaststroke as has the 200 medley relay team.
Jackson’s 200 medley relay team had one of its better times (1:47.36) of the season against Shorecrest (1-3, 2-3).
A good portion of the Timberwolves spent many hours of their holiday break in the pool.
“The focus there (was) to get as much swimming done over the course of those weeks,” Whorley said. “Hopefully in a couple of weeks, it’ll pay dividends for us at the district meet.”
