The Edmonds Arts Commission presents an exhibit of oil pastel and watercolor by John Woodard in the Edmonds Public Library through Dec. 30.

Woodard, a Vashon island resident, works out of doors using the plants, shrubs an trees around his home for his subject matter. The exhibit features evocative landscapes, each picture capturing a moment in time. The distinctive coloration of sky and flora distills the essence of a specific season.

The technique Woodard uses is watercolor resist. First oil pastel is applied in complex layering to achieve subtle color relationships and texture. With practiced precision, the artist then applies a watercolor wash. The watercolor pulls away or resists the oil, creating a unique style. The resulting work has a pleasing simplicity and a graphic quality about it.

Woodard is a graduate of the University of Washington. His award winning work has been featured in art exhibits and fairs throughout the area. In 1998 four of his paintings were selected by the Lieutenant Governor’s Art Council to hang in the state capitol building in Olympia.

This exhibit in the Edmonds Public Library, located at 650 Main Street, may be viewed during library hours: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. For more information call 425-771-0228.
