Meet some fascinating authors at the tenth annual World of Words Literary Evenings presented by the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council in collaboration with the Friends of the Shoreline Library.
At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, Todd Rendleman presents “The Action of Mercy: A Flannery O’Connor Performance Hour.” Born in Savannah, O’Connor’s 31 short stories and two novels explore “the illumination of mystery and grace in the midst of unvarnished, flesh-and-blood human interaction.” Rendleman, an assistant professor of communication at Seattle Pacific University, has dedicated the last ten years to bringing literature to life through performance. On Oct. 16 he will weave together short excerpts from a variety of O’Connor short stories and novels that focus on the revelation of grace in the lives of her characters. Rendleman’s performance is part of the Humanities Washington Inquiring Mind Speakers program.
Local mystery and thriller author Earl Emerson will talk and answer questions about his work on Thursday, Oct. 23. He will also read from his most recent book, “Into the Inferno” released in March 2003, and share tidbits about his next book, “Pyros,” due out in July. These two books are part of five thrillers he is writing, a slight departure from the mysteries that first made him famous. Emerson is author of the Mac Fontana series as well as the Thomas Black detective series. Recipient of the Shamus Award and an Edgar nomination, he is a lieutenant with the Seattle Fire Department. Of his 25 year career, he says, “It’s a little bit like joining the Boy Scouts and then getting paid for it.”
These free literary events take place at the Shoreline Library, located at 345 NE. 175th St., followed by a reception and book signing. Books will be available for purchase. These two evenings, in addition to a Gallery Open House and Readers’ Theatre presentation, are the Arts Council’s part in celebrating National Arts &Humanities Month.
