Ridgecrest Elementary School fifth grader Katrina Young will get her first taste of the international diving scene next weekend.
Young, 11, earned a berth to the USA/Canadian Junior Challenge May 14-18 at the University of Buffalo.
She qualified for the U.S. all-star team by placing second in the girls 11-and-under 3-meter springboard competition at last month’s West Junior National Championships in Pasadena, Calif.
Young’s overall score of 293.45 left her within three points of the winner. The top three finishers in each event from West Nationals and East Nationals advance to the Junior Challenge.
Representing Pacific Northwest Diving, Young also placed eighth in the 1-meter springboard competition with a score of 209.95.
Her older sister Samantha, a freshman at Shorecrest High School, took eighth in the girls 14-15 1-meter springboard division and 14th in the 3-meter division.
Both sisters received invitations to attend a junior national training camp run by former Olympic diving coach Ron O’Brien in June.
