TULALIP — Regents of Washington State University opened two days of meetings in Snohomish County on Thursday with a progress report on efforts to expand the research university’s presence in the community.
A new state law envisions that by 2014 WSU will be in charge of the University Center of North Puget Sound, a consortium of public and private colleges providing courses to roughly 500 students. Everett Community College now administers the program on its campus.
Regents learned of concerns and desires of community leaders in a series of meetings June 30 at the Port of Everett. They then talked about future steps such as creating the committee that will lead the transition and launching an engineering course at the center in 2012.
Thursday night, WSU regents and trustees of the community college had dinner together, the first ever gathering for the two boards.
The regents conclude their work today at the Tulalip Resort Hotel with discussions on the state budget and a presentation on WSU’s hospitality management program. University officials think the program could be offered through the University Center in the future.
