SEATTLE — Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo says it will focus its elephant exhibit on the highly endangered Asian elephants and ship its only African elephant to another zoo.
The zoo says it’s looking to add Asian elephants to join its two female Asian elephants, 42-year-old Bamboo and 35-year-old Chai. The 45-year-old African female Watoto must go.
The zoo said Friday the decision follows a six-month review of its elephant program. It plans to spend up to $3 million in the next five years to strengthen its Asian elephant program. It says it’s optimistic about adding to the herd in the near future.
