PULLMAN — A legislative effort to close a big portion of the 250-mile John Wayne Trail has been temporarily stalled by a working error.
Republican State Reps. Mary Dye and Joe Schmick attempted to close a 130-mile portion of the trail by inserting a last-minute provision into the state’s capital budget.
Because of a typographical error in the language — which stated the trail would be closed “from the Columbia River to the Columbia River,” — the provision has been nullified until it is amended or the language is corrected.
The Moscow-Pullman Daily News says Schmick proposed the closure because the trail isn’t used frequently, and suffers from crime and a lack of improvements since it was constructed in 1980.
They are seeking to close the portion from Vantage to near Tekoa.
