Grants offered to groups teaching financial literacy

EVERETT — April is National Financial Literacy Month, and United Way of Snohomish County is taking it to heart.

That’s why the nonprofit is giving a total of $40,000 in grants to fund financial classes, counseling sessions and provide individual support to low- and moderate-income individuals and their families.

The maximum individual award for a grant is $5,000. The deadline application is April 13. Winners of the grants are scheduled to be notified on May 21.

After getting their funds, the grant recipients have one year to complete their work.

Applicants must be nonprofit or be associated with one, use a financial education curriculum and serve adults, families or youths.

“We are looking for organizations that help provide much needed financial education and literacy to our community,” spokesman Neal Parekh said.

Applicants can be nonprofit groups that are starting their own financial programs or are aiming to expand existing ones, Parekh said.

Their programs must focus on educating people about money management, avoiding fraud or how to plan a budget, among other things.

“These are all things we think people can really use, in particular when times are tough,” Parekh said. “Financial stability in general is very important. It is one of the cornerstones of an healthy community.”

This is the second time United Way is offering grants aimed for financial education. Last year, it gave $30,000 in grants.

Also, applicants are encouraged to attend one of two 30-minute informative sessions this week. They are set for 4 p.m., Thursday and 9 a.m., Friday at United Way of Snohomish County, Suite 200, 3120 McDougall Ave., Everett.

The sessions are set to go over the requirements and help answer any question the applicants may have about the process.

The grant application and instructions can be found on United Way’s website. For more information, or to RSVP for one of the information sessions, contact Lark Kesterke at lark.kesterke@uwsc.org or call 425-374-5506.
