50 years ago (1963)
Poles along the streets of Lowell got a new and Christmasy look as civic-minded people turned out to attach gaily striped candy canes. Lowell also was staging an outdoor Christmas decoration contest all designed to make it one of the most colorful communities around.
The music department of Sultan schools was presenting its winter concert tomorrow night in the high school gym. Directed by George Oelrich Jr., the program included the high school band and chorus, junior band, seventh-grade chorus and eighth-grade girls ensemble.
25 years ago (1988)
An Everett woman had left more than $200,000 to Everett Community College, the Everett Public Library and the Snohomish County Museum and Historical Association. The sums were believed to be the highest ever received for the institutions. Nell Koffski, who died earlier in the year, was involved in all three.
Workers were drilling 17 holes in the bottom of the harbor here to test soil for construction of the Navy base. Bill Jaworski with the firm doing the work said there were many sunken logs from decades of the timber industry and that the bottom looked like pickup sticks.
