STANWOOD — Police have a suspect in the crash of a stolen pickup that caused a train derailment on Jan. 27 near Stanwood.
The suspect is a Stanwood man in his early 20s who is a convicted felon with a history of car theft, according to a search warrant filed Wednesday in Snohomish County Superior Court.
An investigation led Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad police to listen to recorded telephone calls from a prisoner at the Monroe Correctional Complex to the suspect.
During the phone conversations, the suspect allegedly admits to causing the wreck.
There was evidence that a trailer hitch was used to hold down the accelerator of the stolen pickup after it was aimed at the passing train.
Police said they had evidence to jail the suspect for investigation of malicious mischief and theft of a motor vehicle.
