VFW member honored for portraits of fallen soldiers

EDMONDS — Mike Reagan, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8870 of Edmonds, recently was awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal by the U.S. Army 3d Explosive Ordnance Disposal Battalion, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma.

The battalion had numerous casualties during its most recent deployment to Afghanistan. A banquet celebrating its return was held Aug. 16, and Reagan was a speaker. The medal was a surprise.

Reagan has drawn more than 3,300 portraits of service men and women killed while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan as gifts to Gold Star families. His effort is called the Fallen Heroes Project. The Edmonds man is a Marine combat Vietnam veteran.

“His dedication to duty and commitment to the soldiers proved essential to honoring our Fallen Heroes,” Lt. Col. Frank G. Davis wrote in a proclamation.
