In my new, never-stopping quest to bring blog readers here the latest news about bioengineered meat, I’ve happened upon a story about cloned beef. Here’s the skinny from The Coloradoan newspaper, http://www.coloradoan.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060413/BUSINESS/604130335/1046.
Key quote: “The bigger question … may be whether consumers and big food buyers like McDonald’s will purchase meat or milk that are products of cloning. Foods made with genetically engineered corn or soybeans have been sold widely for several years, but polls suggest consumers will be hesitant to buy meat or milk that is produced through biotechnology.”
Like I’ve said before, I’m interested to see what the public reaction to bioengineered meat will be. I know plenty of people who already cast a wary eye toward farmed salmon, and even some local biotech managers I’ve talked to in the past few weeks have said they’re a bit uncomfortable with the thought of eating modified meat.
Full disclosure: These days, owing to my wife’s dietary choices, the meat I eat at home is limited mostly to chicken, turkey and fish. But I’ve got no beef — ha, ha! Get it? — with meat eaters. I still, on occasion, really miss eating hamburgers.
