Murder charge filed in Camano Island shooting

CAMANO ISLAND — Island County Prosecuting Attorney Greg Banks has filed a second-degree murder charge against a Camano Island man accused of gunning down his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend.

Joseph Hicks, 34, was found Thursday face down in the roadway in the 300 block of Heather Drive. A witness allegedly told police that Ezekiel Scannell-McCrae was about 10 feet away from Hicks when he pulled a gun and fired multiple times. The witness heard raised voices before the gunfire.

Scannell-McCrae, 36, was seated on the gravel shoulder when police arrived, according to court papers. He was arrested without incident.

A woman told investigators that Scannell-McCrae, her ex-boyfriend, had stayed at her house overnight. He was asked to leave in the morning. Hicks left the house a short time later but returned quickly, saying that Scannell-McCrae was walking back.

She told police that Hicks went outside. That’s when she heard several gun shots.

She saw Scannell-McCrae and asked where Hicks was. The defendant allegedly told her Hicks was dead.

The woman and her son obtained a no-contact order against Scannell-McCrae in 2015, according to court papers.

Scannell-McCrae is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing firearms.
