A Quarter-Million Dollars Buys A Lot Of Vehicle

This week’s test drive qualifies as snooty.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 is an exclusive edition strictly limited to 460 units worldwide. You basically have to be “approved” to purchase, and have $221,800 in your bank account.

First introduced in the 1980’s, the G Wagon captured people’s hearts with its unique combination of on- and off-road capability that laid the foundation for the model’s unrivaled success that has grown to cult status, known as the “Gelandewagen,” which translates to cross country vehicle.

The G Wagon has become the darling of Hollywood celebrities and elite athletes, with bank accounts to match. At least for a week, I had the chance to pretend.

Powered by a handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine with hybrid assist, and paired with an AMG Speedshift nine-speed transmission, G63 generates 577 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. It travels for 0-to-60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds with a top speed limited at 149 miles per hour.

The engine provides 422 miles of range, approximately 15 miles per gallon fuel economy, and a maximum towing capacity 7,716 pounds. It comes with all-wheel drive, a low-range gearbox, and sequentially lockable differentials, but who are we kidding? This work of art is destined to a “look at me” showcase on city streets.

AMG Dynamic Select allows drivers to change the driving characteristics of their vehicle with the turn of a wheel. AMG drivers can dial in the exact throttle amount to suit their purpose, whether it be efficient cruising, stop-and-go traffic, or bare-knuckle racing.

The boxy G63, designed to one up Jeep, accommodates up to five adults with a generous cargo area (37.4 cu.ft) that can be enhanced (68.6 cu. ft.) with the rear seats folded flat. The 2025 models pays homage to the original 80’s heritage model’s cabin, only with all the modern day bells, whistles and technology.

The Mercedes-AMG G63 boasts several striking exterior highlights, including distinctive AMG-styling, 22-inch cross-spoke forged wheels, and optional carbo fiber and night packages. Key features include an AMG-specific grille, side-mounted exhaust, and exposed spare wheel on the tailgate.

Prominent amber indicator lights above each headlight provide a vintage touch. To round off the vintage styling, the complete front fascia, radiator grille, brush guard, front and rear bumpers, side sills, flared wheel arches and exterior mirror housings are finished with “Night Black Magno”, echoing the rugged look of the first G-Class.

Interior creature comforts run on ad nasuem. My personal favorites include the Bengal red and black Nappa leather seats with elegant diamond-design quilting. But that’s just the beginning. The seats are heated, cooled and have various massage functions that pamper your backside.

Other premium goodies include a Burmester 3D surround sound system that delivers crystal clear sound and seemingly unlimited volume. I also enjoyed the multi-color ambient lighting that was dialed in to Husky purple, and the power tilt/sliding sunroof that let summer permeate the cabin.

Completing the Cliff Notes review of the G63 is a comprehensive safety package with both standard and available features designed to protect occupants and enhance driver awareness. Highlights include Active Distance Assist, Active Steering Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.
