Teamsters award $1,500 to graduating seniors
Two seniors, Shelby Sherrill from Arlington High School and Nicole Hampton from Everett High School, recently received the Teamsters Monte Ingram Scholarship for $1,500 each from the Teamsters Local No. 38.
They were selected from among 15 applicants.
Sherrill is the daughter of Richard and Debra Sherrill. She has been accepted by Western Washington University and Gonzaga University and plans to attend Western, where she plans to study accounting and Spanish.
Hampton is the daughter of Denise Ward and Rick Hampton. She has been accepted by Western Washington University and plans to go there to study business management. She hopes to one day own her own business.
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be a son or daughter of an active, retired, disabled, deceased or laid-off member of Teamsters Local No. 38 or be a member himself or herself; carry a 3.0 or above grade point average and submit SAT or ACT scores along with high school transcripts and two letters of recommendation.
Fluke awards $1,500 to graduating seniors
Zachary Aikins, Mary Dang, Gracie Woolley and Kurt Doten, four seniors who are children of Fluke Corp. employees, recently were awarded $1,500 scholarships from the annual Fluke Corp. Scholarship Award Program.
The students were selected on the basis of academic achievements, school activities, community service and an essay stating their educational and career goals.
Aikins is a graduating senior from Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy High School in Everett. He plans to attend Washington State University to study materials science and engineering and to continue his education in Spanish.
Dang is a graduating senior from Cascade High School in Everett. She plans to attend Dartmouth College to pursue a degree in financial mathematics and also study science.
Woolley is a graduating senior from Snohomish High School. She plans to attend the University of Oregon to pursue a career in education to achieve her lifelong dream of working with children and making a difference in the lives of young adolescents.
Doten is a graduating senior from Kamiak High School in Mukilteo. He plans to attend the University of Idaho to study applied mathematics and statistics.
Lake Stevens Explorers second place at state
Explorers Jacqueline Barnes and Monica Dahl, both of Lake Stevens and members of the Lake Stevens Police Department Explorer Post No. 87, recently won second place in the state 2008 Apple Cup in Yakima for their entry “Traffic Stops.” The high school students competed against 47 other teams for the title.
Monica attends Lake Stevens High School. She lives with her mother, Becky Blackburn, and her stepfather, Robert Blackburn.
Jacqueline attends Cavalero Mid-High School. Her parents are James and Jennifer Barnes.
Other teams from the post also competed in crime scene investigation, high-risk traffic stops, rapid response with active shooter, domestic crisis intervention, police physical performance testing and search and arrest techniques. This was the first competition of its kind for the Lake Stevens Explorers.
Monroe junior earns fourth Latin gold medal
John Berude of Monroe, a junior at The Overlake School in Redmond, recently won a gold medal in the national Latin exam for his fourth consecutive year. The national Latin exam committee notified the independent, nonsectarian school of John’s accomplishment, and awarded him an Oxford Classical Dictionary.
Lake Stevens students win $1,000 for service
Lake Stevens High School recently was selected to receive the 2008 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America National High School Community Service Award, sponsored by FCCLA for their project “SOS: Safe Online Surfing,” created to inform students and parents about Internet safety.
Derek Hahn, a Lake Stevens High School junior, presented a workshop on the “SOS” program at the National Cluster Meeting held in Denver as part of the team’s project.
The Lake Stevens High School FCCLA chapter will receive a $1,000 award, presented to them at the 2008 FCCLA national leadership meeting in July in Orlando, Fla.
For their project, the Lake Stevens FCCLA members created and implemented 10 different lessons about Internet safety for various grades focusing on Internet seduction and exploitation, obscenities, online predators, SPAM messages and identity theft.
Three thousand middle and high school students were educated on the dangers of the Internet. FCCLA members also spoke about and distributed information about the Community Service National Program, the “SOS” project and FCCLA to Lake Stevens School District parents, Washington state legislators and the state’s Senate delegation in Washington, D.C.
Lake Stevens junior FCCLA president
Derek Hahn, a Lake Stevens High School junior, recently was elected as the 2008-2009 president of Washington State Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. FCCLA is a national student-lead organization with family as the central focus.
Derek’s duties will include being a role model and leader for the career and technical student organization in the upcoming year.
Derek has been actively involved in FCCLA during his three years in high school and he is the Lake Stevens ASB secretary-treasurer for the coming year.
Shoreline student named to Jamestown Dean’s list
Kate Eaton of Shoreline recently was named to the Dean’s list at the Jamestown College Honors Convocation. She also received the John L. and Palma Wilson Scholarship.
Established in 1883, Jamestown College in Jamestown, N.D., is a private, liberal arts, four-year college granting Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees.
Everett senior awarded Hendrix scholarship
Lauren Nasr of Everett, a senior at Everett High School, has received both an academic scholarship and a research scholarship to attend Hendrix College beginning in the fall of 2008. Nasr is the daughter of Devin and Bonnie Nasr.
Hendrix College, founded in 1876, is an undergraduate, liberal-arts college in Conway, Ark., affiliated with the United Methodist Church since 1884.
Everett student wins aviation scholarship
Sereysophaktra Som of Everett, a senior at the University of North Dakota John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, was recently awarded a John L. Robertson Jr. Memorial Scholarship.
Sereysophaktra (also known as Paktra) is a commercial aviation major. He was the president of the Asian Student Association and has worked with other student organizations to create special events such as a Martin Luther King week and dances for the entire campus. Paktra plans to work in the airline business in the Northwest, preferably in Seattle.
Two Everett students named to dean’s list
Thyra Nast and Catherine Manhardt, both of Everett, recently were named to the dean’s list at American University in Washington, D.C.
To earn dean’s list honors at American University, a student must obtain a 3.5 grade point average or better on their semester courses.
Nast is a sophomore in the School of International Service at American University majoring in international studies.
Manhardt is a sophomore in the School of International Service at American University majoring in international studies.
Students honored by University of Portland
Lisa Coate, Katherine Brown and Jacqueline Mero recently were named to the 2008 spring semester dean’s list at the University of Portland in Oregon.
Students need at least a 3.5 grade point average to make the dean’s list.
Coate, of Everett, is a sophomore majoring in nursing.
Brown, of Gold Bar, is a junior with an undeclared major.
Mero, of Brier, recently graduated from the University of Portland with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Two students earn psychology degrees
Cole Vonder Haar of Lynnwood and Jessica Dahmen of Everett recently graduated from the University of Portland in Oregon with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
University President Rev. E. William Beauchamp conferred 607 bachelors’ and 162 masters’ degrees during the commencement exercises held in May in the Earle A. and Virginia H. Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus.
Snohomish student honored by The Citadel
Cadet Daniel Walters of Snohomish recently was honored for outstanding academic achievement at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, during the spring semester. Walters is seeking a bachelor’s degree in political science.
Walters is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Walters.
Walters achieved dean’s list recognition, which is given to those cadets and active duty military students registered for 12 or more semester hours whose grade point ratio is 3.2 or higher with no grade below a C for the previous semester’s work.
In addition, Walters earned a gold star for achieving a 3.7 grade point average or higher.
