Seattle Art Museum named contemporary artist Titus Kaphar its inaugural Gwendolyn Knight and Jacob Lawrence Fellow.
SAM will honor Kaphar with the first solo exhibition in its Gwendolyn Knight and Jacob Lawrence Gallery from April 3 through Sept. 6 at the downtown museum, 1300 First Ave., Seattle.
Kaphar also receives a $10,000 award to further his art.
Kaphar’s solo show, “History in the Making,” will feature 16 mixed-media paintings. Kaphar is known for reconfiguring 18th and 19th century European and American paintings in strategic ways, creating “alternative histories” that provoke discussions about race and social issues.
SAM’s Gwendolyn Knight and Jacob Lawrence Fellowship is awarded biannually to an early career black artist. The fellowship was created to provide inspiration for young artists and scholarships in the field of art history. For more information, go to www.seattleartmuseum.org.
