Benefit show for Arlington shelter is the cat’s meow

It started five years ago as a way to devote a day of fun to cats and their owners, to bring cats from their shelter in hopes of finding them new homes and to raise funds. Its popularity has kept it going ever since.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Shoreline Community Center, the public is welcome to attend the fifth annual Average Joe Cat Show and photo contest, which benefits Purrfect Pals, a local cat-rescue sanctuary.

“This is a great event for the entire family,” Purrfect Pals’ spokesperson Chris Federlein said. “There is a silent auction, raffles and cats and kittens will be available for adoption.”

Proceeds from admission will go toward the shelter’s expenses.

The show and contest both will feature categories such as Monster Cat, Most Obnoxious Cat, Softest Fur, Mr. Personality, Ms. Personality and so on. The contest entry deadline was Monday, but spectators are still encouraged for Saturday.

“We also have categories for cats in costume and best decorated cage,” Federlein said.

To provide all the furry participants with a sense of accomplishment, Federlein said, ribbons are awarded to each entrant, not just the first-place winners, in both the cat show and the photo contest.

Furthermore, the event will feature numerous pet service and product vendors, including food and toy suppliers and spay-and-neuter groups.

Joy Turner, a pet behavior and training specialist, will be on hand to talk about how people can communicate with their pets, among other topics, and the venue will be set up with a Kid’s Korner for craft activities and a photo booth for people and their cats to capture a shot of this fun day.

The Purrfect Pals shelter is located at 230 McRae Road NE, Arlington. You can get more information on the show and the shelter by calling 360-652-9611, or online at www.purrfectpals.org.
