Books as art

The Everett Library will feature 73 handmade books by Western Washington University Art professor Elsi Vassdal Ellis during its second annual Evening for Excellence at 7 p.m. Friday. Ellis will talk about her work.

She has produced more than 60 limited edition handmade books and 83 one-of-a kind books since she began in 1983. Her work is in the permanent collections of Duke University, The New York City Public Library, the Yale University Library, the University of Washington and the San Francisco Public Library.

The suggested donation is $10. The proceeds will go to the Library Fund for purchasing books.

Book-It Repertory Theatre will also be performing the children’s story “Ereth’s Birthday.” Carl Montford will present a printing demonstration and Henri Wilson demonstrates calligraphy. He will also provide a piece of original artwork to be raffled off that night.

There will be wine, coffee and desserts, and jazz by pianist Deems Tsutakawa courtesy of Espresso Americano Coffee Shop. Reservation can be made, but tickets will also be available at the door. Call 425-257-8013.

Cruisin’ for food

Jorge Cruise, author of “The 3-Hour Diet: How Low-Carb Diets Make You Fat and Timing Makes You Thin,” will tout his no-calorie-counting, no deprivation plan at 2 p.m. Saturday at Third Place Books. Cruise claims that eating small amounts every three hours keeps your metabolism at warp speed. Luckily, there’s a food court at Third Place.
